   OK, so I tried to use a 32bit distro to rule out the possibillity that the   
   problem had something to do with the fact that all the new distro's I'd   
   tried were 64bit and the problem persists.    
      
   I'm starting to think that the mainboard either has something very new or   
   very standards non-adherent about it with regards to ACPI.
