   Have you poked around the bios looking for the power off settings? Even    
   if they are set as we would assume they should be to power off, might    
   try changing them & see what happens...   
   fwiw, I have Ubuntu 6.10 32 bit on a Intel 850 (Rambus) board 3.0G &    
   ATi. CLI sudo shutdown now acts similar to what you describe. Goes    
   through the motions, eventually to a black screen but never powers down.   
   Clicking the shut down button in the GUI shuts down correctly.   
   Haven't got around to solving it... Just using the GUI for now.
