Pine isn't in the depositories, you're right. Strange. But it is in the
next release, so it seems. But I understand you just named it as an
   example.
(By the way: if you like to use Pine, I don't think you're a typical new
   linux user :o)
But their is a whole shipload of other mail-programs available right out
of the depositories. And some window-programs simply don't exist in
Linux, that's right, but the opposite is also true.
I switched finally to Kubuntu a few weeks ago, after months of preparing.
And I had quite a hard time installing streaming media in Firefox.
The documentation certainly can be better, but Ubuntu is working very hard
on that. They just started, for example, a project to make instruction
video's about all kind of things. And with a little searching or asking in
a forum most of the time you can find answers.
I think it's too strong to say 'Even the documentation sucks'. It depends
very much on the program you use. Some programs have really good, clear
manuals, others have nothing at all. Just like in windows. And there are
more and more books about Ubuntu.

I couldn't find a decent desktop indexing program. Kat crashes all the
time, and beagle indexes only the first part of a long document. This kind
of things make me think most people better wait another year before they
start with Ubuntu, because too many things are still too difficult for the
average user. I only disagree partially with you because I think you say
   it too strong.
