    You say that as if it should surprise one. Even in the oldest   
   of Mac OS versions users could explore lower level interaction   
   with the OS via scripting with included tools. The power of *IX,   
   IMO, lies with the kernel itself. The power of the CLI, which can   
   exist in most any OS environment, including windows, lies with the   
   commands and ability to connect them via pipes and scripting. *IX   
   environments are excellent in this respect, but the number of users   
   who will need/want to use these tools is a small percentage of the   
   population of computer users. In some various SVR4 implementations   
   certain commands were simply Bourne shell scripts....I think either   
   df or du was one example. But, point and click versions of almost   
   all shell commands are doable, and for many users will suffice. That's   
   the value of free choice. The philosophy of OSS, I believe, is not to   
   direct how things should be done, but rather to provide tools as   
   appropriate for users.
