Answering that question could end up in a very lengthy discussion.
There is a group of people that for various political or technical
reasons does not like KDE and/or the used QT libraries.

There is another group that does not like the seemingly haphazard ways
in which Gnome is integrating various applications.

Personally I have no objections against the KDE project and actually
like the fact they do not try to artificially avoid some of Microsoft's
smart adaptations of the Desktop. Yes KDE can look like a MS Windows
clone but it is not, more importantly it works.
A working Trash and cross-application cut and paste are some of the
   strong points of KDE.

The Gnome desktop has spurred the development of some of the greatest
   programs for Linux desktop use.

So the great thing of Linux is that you can mix all these applications
to your heart's content, with the various distributions of *ubuntu
available it's even easier to do this mixing.

Konsole is a nice twist to the basis of Linux, the command line.
Kmail just works, especially when you feel comfortable with MS Outlook
Express it is an easy program to get into.
