   IIRC the idea is that executables go in specific places in your $PATH and   
   are not found if not in that path. The './' tells the shell you are using   
   to look in the current directory, '.', for the file to execute you append   
   the '/' because in unix file systems files prepended with a '.' are   
   "hidden" so the '/' is used to differentiate. Searching in the   
   current directory, '.', is not done by default for security reasons.   
      
   For fun you could place your executable one directory up and use '../' to   
   run it. The '.' and '..' are file system place holders for current   
   directory, '.', and directory one level up, '..'. If you want to know more
