   I tried it. Still quite clunky. Pan tries to emulate Agent, one of my least    
   favorite newsreaders. Xnews works like Firefox, opening up another tab or    
   page when clicked on. Simply close the new page (which contains the    
   message) to return to the threaded view. Of course, it does come with    
   split-screen enabled, but that's easily changed.   
      
   I can run Xnews in WINE, but it doesn't behave properly.
