   Whatever directory you'd like. I usually put them in /opt/whateverprogram.   
   You'll probably want to use a command line 'apt-get install' to install it   
   - assuming it is a 'deb' package. If it's a tar gz then you run 'tar xzvf   
   whateverprogram' then cd down a level and read about what to do -   
   generally, but not always, it's './configure' 'make' 'make install'

   I've seen some that worked that way too. I MUCH prefer having things in   
   the apt database - makes dependencies, upgrades, etc. much better.
