   Thanks, I managed a browse using w3m in emacs in full screen mode after   
   all :-)   
      
   A complete uninstall of gnome-panel and a reinstall of same did it - but   
   for some reason the mixer applet was corrupt. Deleted that and it all   
   worked.   
      
   Sometimes Ubuntu pisses me off, but I must say the ability to "rebuild"   
   without a reinstall frequently amazes me.
