   Hi,

just installed Ubuntu to get rid of all those XP/Vista crap.

Installation only worked when I set graphic to 640x480x16, in any other
case there where only transverse lines (red and apricot) on screen
instead of showing the live-CD Desktop.

When setting to 640x480 the desktop popped up in normal resolution
(widescreen) and everything seemed to be normal, I could install Ubuntu
   with no problems.

After reboot I get the starting screen (ubuntu logo) and the same
transverse lines again after hearing the "bongo" and nothing happens
   anymore. Any idea?

For me it seems as if gnome needs a lower resolution to start up and
then changes into the right resolution (here: widescreen). Else it will
hang showing these transverse lines. (But just an idea, I have never
   worked with linux before).
   Any solution?

   Thanks and best regards,
   Oliver
