   Type mount

You will get something like this: (will be different on ubuntu)

   /dev/hda1 on / type ext2 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
   /dev/hda2 on /home type ext2 (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=4,mode=620)
shm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)

In this case when I look at / I am reading files off of /dev/hda1
When I am looking at /home I am reading files off of /dev/hda2
The other mount points are virtual, they exist in memory.

If I unmount /dev/hda2 then /home is an empty folder on hda1.

If I add files to /home when /dev/hda2 is unmounted then they are on
   /dev/hda1/
If I then mount /dev/hda2 on /home these files are inaccesable and I see
the files on /dev/hda2 on /home.

If I then unmount /dev/hda2 again, I can see the /home files on /dev/hda1

Did that make it more unclear?
