I have a pda (Dell Axim x51v) that I do use to read books. It is a
very sharp screen and I have no problem reading it on the subway.
Normally I commute by bike though and opinions vary on whether bikers
should listen to music, but everyone agrees that reading is a bad
   idea.

I saw a thread about synching a Windows Mobile pda with Ubuntu but I'm
nowhere near ready to try that.
