   I found I was stuck with the same problem several years ago, when I    
   moved to linux. I did not use a virtual machine, but eventually    
   concluded that for a simple life I would have to ultimately sacrifice    
   TP and find something else.   
      
   I began with thunderbird then, and still use it. Thunderbird is being    
   very actively developed and supported, - very different to TP as you    
   know. It is not that close to TP functionality, but at least it is not    
   woven into explorer. I have found useful ways to do most of what I had    
   got used to in TP.   
      
   Initially I felt that I liked TP so much that I delayed a full move to    
   linux. Looking back though, I would sacrifice a great deal more than    
   TP to get the stability and freedom the linux provides.
