I'm pretty sure that TP Connect will run under Wine. I recall seeing
posts about it in demon.ip.support.turnpike some years ago. I did ask
again recently and didn't get confirmation though.

You can run a Windows OS under VMWare but XP wouldn't be my choice. I
believe that TP will run under NT4 workstation or Windows 98, both of
which are less resource-hungry than XP.

You shouldn't have to worry about viruses or spyware. If you store the
data and configuration files on a Linux partition then you should be
able to return the virtual machine to its starting state without saving
anything. Any malware that gets past TP will disappear when you close
   the session.

One additional thing that you might like to consider is buying an extra
Turnpike seat and enabling Connect's IMAP server. This should give you
some of the advantages of Turnpike, like mail-routing and
pseudo-newsgroups, while using native Linux clients.

I have to say that this is all theoretical, I haven't done any of this
yet but I plan to at some point. Like you I haven't found any other
mail/news clients that could replace Turnpike. Which is one of the
reasons why I'm posting to a Linux newsgroup from a Windows machine.
