   Yes. I believe, but am not 100% sure, the viruses can still effect the   
   underlying image.   
      
   There are heaps of email clients which will meet your needs I am   
   sure. To run xp in vmware to stick with one program is a tad overkill I   
   think but certainly possible.   
      
   But why? Linux is inherently secure in itself and news / email readers   
   such as slrn, mutt and gnus (not to mention the more girly knode, pan   
   and thunderbird) are all secure IMO. Remember, they are sitting on a   
   much more secure permission based file system - and are also simply not   
   so targeted as the ubiquitous Outlook.
