   and smtp, pop3 and numerous others... i used to regularly telnet to a smtpp   
   server on the smtp port and manually enter the commands, type the message   
   headers and message and send it... it was quite the experiance learning how   
   things really work behind the scenes...   
      
   here's another one for ya... if you have a POTS connection still, one can   
   set up a tap off the serial for "snooping"... yes, you can read everything   
   and se the binary of the files... it is all plain characters... nothing   
   fancy... this works on the unencrypted network protocols, too ;)
