Hi! All,              I must have been on a drugged-up high last night (don't worry, all prescribed       meds). After 'dark', I compiled a new CM II from v1.5 source, and let it       loose for about 40 mins last night. All was good till my little netbook       locked up in Thunderbird, trying to read the Fidonews group/echo. Ermm...       Thunderbird has never done this before and exhibited unnerving behaviour.        Eeek!              So, this morning... most of which for me has elaspsed, I've been attempting       some sort of recovery. First idea was to switch to yesterday's backup. Then,       after a re-think: maybe I could do better using the JAM files from -this-       node. After starting that task, it became too hard as the echo area filenames       were not consistant between nodes. Great fun, after blowing 45 mins on that!              Therefore I have commenced plan 'C'. I am about half-way through re-enacting       plan 'A' again, using yesterday's backup. But I had to take the time to write       this note... which is another annoying task diverting my attention from the       job of fixing what needs fixin'. In short: I am having a Friday. Which some       of you who used to work may remember was usualy a 'given', where Murphy's rule       rules.              Mmm... I will be doing a compile of the CM II 0.71 linux source this arvo. At       least I will be prepared this time for up-fu@ks... hopefully. ;-0              Oh, and before I leave this note... I am thanking my lucky stars to have       invested in registering the windows file manger Total Commander (TC)' all       those years ago. You see, my daily backups from #/1384 are in the form of a       full directory tree of /opt/ftn/fido/* contained in a .tar file. (That's the       entire Fido configuration for the node; no other Fido-related stuff anywhere       else.) TC has no trouble at all navigating around in a .tar archive. Further,       I was able to write a fresh .zip in the left file panel with (JAM) files       highlighted in the right file panel, contained in the .tar! Try that Neil       Armstrong!              Cheers,       Paul.              ... No smoke or sparks! ...Hmmm... Must be a software problem then...       --- Paul's Win98SE VirtualBox        * Origin: Quinn's Post - Maryborough, Queensland, OZ (3:640/384)    |
