I try        ar> not to, but it happens. I'm seeing a trend of less and less valuable        ar> communications coming via Facebook and Twitter: does anyone else feel        ar> the same way? I would be interested in exploring this degradation if        ar> anyone also works in this industry.              Actually I don't see any real discussions on Facebook at all. I see a lot of       adds and political stuff and I see a lot of people who are not really computer       folks who otherwise probably wouldn't be using those kinds of services if they       weren't so easy and popular. I'm not trying to say computer people are better       than anyone else but I didn't see these same types of people (my friends) using       BBSs when I was long ago and certainly weren't interested in such things prior       to computing popularity explosions. Facebook as you pointed out is a nice face       on what is otherwise an old idea that has been around for a long time. On       Facebook I see a lot of is pictures of their children or bumper sticker type       pictures and little comments on those. No real content or discussions, nothing       like the potential it could have to really bring large groups of people       together and possible innovate or solve issues. I think one part of the problem       is the actual friend request and stigmata associated with the friends thing.       Friends and the amount of a persons friends is similar to societal status       symbol or a class type system. So if all your friends abandon you based on the       content you provide this causes the fear of real content or discussion for want       of agreement or likability.              I've never felt a need for popularity on a BBS and it certainly wasn't on       display for everyone to see: person X has 4000 friends therefore they must be       important and worthy of my ear or attention.                ar> As for the "next big thing". I believe it will be a new social network        ar> phenomenon called "SyncHack". It will replace FaceBook, Google+,       What is SyncHack?         ar> Twitter and Linked In because it will be labelled a "turnkey,        ar> best-of-breed enterprise 2.0 solution".               ar> :)                      --- MultiMail/Win32 v0.49        þ Synchronet þ Dark Sanctuary darksanctuary.servebbs.com        * Origin: Time Warp of the Future BBS - Home of League 10 (1:340/400)    |
