   I'm sure they're growing financially.  In the end, they're gonna get crushed   
   under their own weight.  They've become so big that they have to sell out in   
   order to stay afloat.  The sacrifices they have to make to turn the profit is   
   driving people away.  That, and they're becoming overly complicated.   
      
   In the beginning, it was the simplicity that attracted people, and the lack of   
   ugly advertising.  In the end, at some point, I think a percentage of people   
   may start using homegrown forums again (not BBSes, I'm sure, but locally   
   established nonprofit forums).  I think that'll happen because as hobbyists, we   
   aren't out to seek a huge profit.  So, very little advertising.  With people   
   all across the world setting up small online local communities, it scales   
   naturally.  Perhaps we'll even see some forums gated to usenet ala "echoes" ;)   
      
   I'm waiting on Diaspora to become easier to install, and I'll be setting that   
   up alongside my BBS.  Last I checked its dependencies were a nightmare; the   
   authors even said it was rather complicated and recommended using their server   
   until the code was a little more complete.
