Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:              ak> OK, "God rest you merry, sir." But not OK, ;-) I am still have        ak> a vague understanding of this phrase. Write it in other words.                      The OED doesn't define this phrase, apart from its components, and       I had to think about it too. I must confess that although I am quite       comfortable with 17th century English, I often find Shakespeare's works a bit       of a stretch.                The best translation I can come up with is "God keep/maintain you       in a state of happiness/joy". This seems appropriate if the gentlemen in the       song rejoice whilst they & other Christians are celebrating the birth of Jesus.               Nowadays people would be more inclined to say "God bless you",       which isn't exactly the same... as Dallas remarked... but uses even fewer       words. :-)       --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+        * Origin: Wits' End, Vancouver CANADA (1:153/716)       SEEN-BY: 1/123 14/0 15/0 16/101 19/36 30/0 90/1 103/705 105/81 106/201       SEEN-BY: 116/18 120/340 123/131 129/305 138/146 153/250 757 7715 154/10       SEEN-BY: 218/700 221/1 6 222/2 226/30 227/114 229/424 426 664 700       SEEN-BY: 230/150 152 240/1120 5832 249/206 317 250/1 261/38 100 266/512       SEEN-BY: 267/155 275/100 282/1038 1056 291/100 111 301/0 1 101 113       SEEN-BY: 317/3 320/119 219 322/757 340/400 341/66 342/11 200 396/45       SEEN-BY: 460/58 640/1321 712/848 801/161 189 920/1 3634/12 5020/715       SEEN-BY: 5020/1042 5058/104       PATH: 153/7715 261/38 301/1 229/426           |
