Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:               AH> WRT the bike, I've heard of bicycle wheels being stolen        AH> here in Vancouver. I wonder if the owner forgot about it        AH> or chose to keep the wheels & abandon the other parts....               AK> The problem where to keep things safer is actual around        AK> the world.                      Yes, I'm sure it is. You may think your bicycle is safe because       you chained & locked it, but you can't count on that around here. And what       one may think of as big-city problems also appear in the suburbs &       elsewhere... (sigh).                             AK> For instance, where to keep your money safer -- in bank        | in a bank or in the bank               AK> or at home?               AK> In bank your money are eaten by inflation,        | your money is [blah blah]. Dollars, Euros, rubles etc.        are countable... the word "money" isn't.                      Or bank fees or whatever. Here in Canada the federal government       now provides deposit insurance (up to a limited amount) so that it's unlikely       we'll find our life savings reduced to zero in an eyeblink, as many people       apparently did long ago. The theory, however, has not yet been rigorously       tested.... :-Q                             AK> but at home they can be taken by more conventional        AK> robbers. ;-)                      Uh-huh. Dallas & I read a book by a professional thief, in which       it was made quite clear that such people know where others are most likely to       hide their valuables regardless of how clever they think they've been. We       have also heard from friends & relatives about their experiences while       travelling abroad. One individual said his watch was stolen in England from       underneath his pillow, although he slept with his head on the latter. Another       noticed someone outside his bedroom window who quickly disappeared when it       became obvious he was awake. And a friend's wallet was stolen in Italy...       apparently by "a cute little girl"       ... from the pouch he carries underneath his middle-aged belly.               If you hide your $$$ under the mattress, under the edge of a       carpet, etc. it seems likely dishonest people will check out such places       first.... :-Q                                   --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+        * Origin: Wits' End, Vancouver CANADA (1:153/716)       SEEN-BY: 1/123 90/1 120/340 123/131 138/146 153/250 757 802 6809 7715       SEEN-BY: 154/10 221/0 6 226/30 227/114 702 229/101 275 424 426 664       SEEN-BY: 229/1016 240/1120 1634 1895 2100 5138 5411 5832 5853 8001       SEEN-BY: 240/8002 8005 249/206 317 261/38 280/5003 313/41 317/3 320/219       SEEN-BY: 322/757 331/313 333/808 335/206 364 370 342/200 382/147 2454/119       SEEN-BY: 3634/12 4500/1 5020/1042       PATH: 153/7715 757 221/6 335/364 240/1120 5832 229/426           |
