At first, I thought this was a       printing error. But lo and behold, it is exactly the same in physical print.       The sentence would sound better to me without the "to" in front of "against"       and still render the meaning well enough.              But apparently, Fitz is using an archaic form of "against" as a conjunction.        The use of the word hear is to mean "in preparation of time or a delay" or "to       oppose" something.              I've read the book many years ago, and don't recall too many issues like the       above. I probably just assumed they were printing errors and moved on.              Hope this helps!              PS. You picked a challenging book if you want learn english. There are       probably many more archaic uses of words in it.              --- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101       Thunderbird/60.9.1        * Origin: nntp://rbb.fidonet.fi - Lake Ylo - Finland (2:221/360.0)       SEEN-BY: 1/120 123 15/0 2 16/101 18/0 19/10 36 34/999 90/1 104/115       SEEN-BY: 106/201 114/224 702 705 706 116/18 116 123/0 25 50 140 150       SEEN-BY: 123/755 128/2 73 187 253 135/300 153/7715 154/10 203/0 218/700       SEEN-BY: 221/0 1 6 360 222/2 227/114 229/354 426 1014 230/150 152       SEEN-BY: 240/1120 5832 249/206 307 317 250/1 261/38 100 266/512 267/155       SEEN-BY: 275/100 280/5003 282/1031 1056 291/1 111 298/25 305/1 3 310/2       SEEN-BY: 312/2 317/3 320/119 219 322/757 340/400 342/13 200 396/45       SEEN-BY: 423/81 460/58 640/1138 1321 1384 712/848 801/161 189 2320/105       SEEN-BY: 3005/1 3634/0 12 15 27 50 5020/715 1042       PATH: 221/360 1 640/1384 3634/12 261/38 15/0 317/3 229/426           |
