   He most certainly could.  Here in the USA, people celebrate "the Fourth"   
   for several days (and sometimes weeks when the weather is nice).  I do not   
   remember that happening when I was a child but maybe I just did not notice.   
   It sounds as if it was happening back in Gatsby's time for sure.  :)
