Recently you wrote in a message to Anton Shepelev:               AK>> I read this:        AK>> Annabel and Midge had been best friends almost from        AK>> the day that Midge had found a job as stenographer        AK>> with the firm that employed Annabel.               AK>> How can I explain to my conscience the absence of "a"        AK>> before "stenographer"? ;)               [...]               AK> As for president - my textbook says an article is        AK> unnecessary in official job titles, if there is only        AK> one person holding this position at any given time.                      IMHO you answered your own question there. Depending on the size       of the firm, one stenographer... i.e. a person who can take dictation in       shorthand & type it out at a fairly impressive rate... may have been enough.        I don't see any evidence indicating Annabel had been employed in the same       capacity.               Not to worry. It's often said in the EdBiz that before knowing       what questions to ask we must already know at least half of the answer...       [chuckle].                                   --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+        * Origin: Wits' End, Vancouver CANADA (1:153/716)       SEEN-BY: 1/120 123 15/2 18/0 116/116 123/0 25 50 150 755 135/300 138/146       SEEN-BY: 153/250 757 7715 154/10 203/0 221/0 1 6 360 227/114 229/354       SEEN-BY: 229/426 1014 240/100 1120 1634 2100 5138 5832 5853 8001 8002       SEEN-BY: 249/206 317 261/38 280/5003 5006 300/4 313/41 317/3 320/219       SEEN-BY: 322/757 335/364 342/200 382/147 460/58 640/1138 1321 1384       SEEN-BY: 712/848 2454/119 3634/0 12 15 24 27 50       PATH: 153/7715 3634/12 640/1384 221/1 280/5003 240/1120 5832 229/426           |
