   I  myself  am  using  Sylheed (as you may have seen from the   
   headers) as one  of  the  most  beautiful  e-mail  and  news   
   clients.   I don't think any other GUI client lets one avoid   
   cartoonish icons and gradients and have a  sharp  and  plain   
   interface.   But  I am not going to recommend it to a newbie   
   because it has no support of a killfile and its  filters  do   
   not work with NNTP accounts:
