   I believe it is a box that one keeps facial tissue (also known in the US by   
   a brand name, "kleenex") in.  The author mentions that it is full of   
   cushions.  That would make me think he was referencing the softness of the   
   inside of a box full of facial tissue... very soft and cushioned on the   
   inside.
