Hi, Anton Shepelev!       I read your message from 26.01.2017 18:55               AK>> They don't think of a Gerund if there is a noun        AK>> expressing the similar meaning. So "invade" requires        AK>> nothing.               AS> Who are "they"? Can you provide arguments instead of the        AS> appeal to authority?              When you hear "they say" don't ask who. ;) It is like an idiom.               AK>> You require a spell checker however. ;)        AS> I know, but am trying to make do without.               AS>>> I therefore view "invasion" in the phrase "invasion of        AS>>> Iraq" as a gerund.               AK>> What about seeing it as a noun? :)               AS> Then would you please mark for me the difference between        AS> "the invasion of Iraq" and "the invading of Iraq"?              I looked in my textbook: there is no Gerund in "the invading of Iraq"              1. Gerund is not used with articles       2. Gerund is used without preposition.       2. Gerund can't be used with adjectives (but we can easily add an adjective       here "the outrageous invading of Iraq"              In short we have here an "ing noun". But since we have "invasion", I doubt       that using "invading" as a noun is OK.              Many verbs don't have ing nouns. For instance, produce(production, not       producing), manufacture(manufacture, not manufacturing) sell(sale, not       selling)".              Bye, Anton!       Alexander Koryagin       ENGLISH_TUTOR 2017              --- Paul's Win98SE VirtualBox        * Origin: Quinn's Post - Maryborough, Queensland, OZ (3:640/384)    |
