AS>> "invade" is a transitive verb (it already contains

AK> Sorry, what does require a gerund? Where is a gerund

The verb "invade", being transitive, acting upon a nount and
used in a noun phrase, requres the putting of itself into
the form of a gerund :-) I therefore view "invasion" in the
phrase "invasion of Iraq" as a gerund.
