   Well, probably it was what the author wanted to say, although if we bore a pit   
   from pole to pole we'll have a kind of tube and some light can get into it. I   
   would put it in this way:

     Black as like inside of a ball, I thank whatever gods may be   
     For my unconquerable soul.
