-=> Ardith Hinton wrote to Flavio Bessa <=-               AH> Hi again, Flavio! More on the subject of "at" and "in":               Hello Ardith! That's awesome, since this is one of my greatest         difficulties in English grammar. :)                AH> I was glad to see your comment in another echo, BTW, that you        AH> don't mind waiting awhile for answers. WRT complex grammatical issues        AH> I tend to be slow to respond because I'm thinking of examples & looking        AH> for patterns. :-)               That's perfectly fine to me, as this is the beauty of BBSing.         You can't have an immediate reaction to your posts, as you need         some time for the replies. ;)                AH> "I'll meet you at the ABC Restaurant in Richmond" was one        AH> example I used earlier. Another which occurred to me later is from an        AH> old song:               AH> Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,        AH> Meet me at the fair.                      AH> We use "in" with names of cities, towns, or villages.        AH> Usually such places have clearly defined boundaries. I gather you live        AH> in or near Recife, which according to my atlas is within the province        AH> or state of Pernambuco. I see that Brazil is a very large country by        AH> comparison with other countries in South America & that Recife is on        AH> the east coast. If you're not sure what to write about but want to        AH> improve your English, tell us more about Brazil. The eyes of the world        AH> are on your country because of the Olympic Games. And as I used to        AH> advise my students, "Write about what you know".... :-)               Although the BBS I am using to post this message is located         in Recife, I live in Rio de Janeiro.                As in Brazil we don't have access to the Pacific Ocean, we do not         use this concept of "east coast" and "west coast". The country is         divided by regions, being:                - North Region, where the Amazon is located;        - Northeast Region, where the town of Recife is located;        - Center-West Region, where the capital, Brasilia, is located;        - Southeast Region, where you can find the major cities of Rio         (where I live) and Sao Paulo;        - South Region, which is known most for its agricultural products,         wine and cattle.                The Northeast region, where Recife is located, has a sunny climate,         and it is a main tourist attraction for the people that live in Rio        or Sao Paulo and are looking for beautiful beaches and warm waters,        as this part of the country is served by the warm current of Mexico.                Recife is the 9th largest city in Brazil, with roughly 1.6 million         inhabitants as from what I could get at Wikipedia.                I have traveled to Recife several times, for business and pleasure, as         it hosts a booming tech industry and has several beautiful beaches with warm       waters. :)                AH> We use "in" with names of neighbourhoods (e.g. Greenwich        AH> Village in New York City & Notting Hill in London).               AH> We use "in" with names of states (e.g. Queensland, Kentucky,        AH> Idaho) ... with names of shires in Great Britain... with names of        AH> counties in (e.g.) Ireland & the USA... and with names of Canadian        AH> provinces & territories.               AH> We use "in" with names of countries.               AH> We use "in" WRT other physical areas which are more or less        AH> clearly defined, such as a house or a garden... and by extension we use        AH> "in" if we're referring to (e.g.) a book, a painting, a Fidonet echo,        AH> or a "frame of mind".               AH> We often use "in" WRT a particular month or year... but we        AH> also use "at" or "on" WRT to time. I'll deal with that issue in        AH> another chapter. ;-)               Awesome! Thank you very much for this, it will help me a lot! ;)                             ---       .-----________________--_ ________.--'-`--.____ Hugs from Flavio Bessa       \____==================_) \_'===================' Syzo of Saturn's Orbit        - -|__|-.______|=====/ `---' Netmail 4:801/189.1         Live long ` ù._ _ _ _~~~~~| fcbessa@gmail.com         and prosper... `-.__________,' Always UnionNET Addicted!                     ...
