   They  wished every viewer that the coming year would   
   be *a* happy one for him or her.   In  other  words,   
   that  he  or  she would be able to say a year later:   
   "2016 has been *a* happy year for me."  The  indefi-   
   nite  article  suggests that whether a year is happy   
   on not is purely a subjective matter on which  there   
   are as many opinions as there are people.
