Some new year fun around the world

Hi, Alexander! Recently you wrote in a message to All:

ak> "My wife urges me that it is very useful to eat raw
   ak> vegetables"
ak> "Yeah, mine also doesn't like cooking!"

Two sentences... two different speakers. While some software may try
to improve on the spacing you got it right. You omitted a full stop, however.

As a certain author of practical & amusing books about housewifery...
Peg Bracken or Erma Bombeck, I'm not sure which now... once said, it's not the
cooking per se. It's the dailiness... [chuckle].

As an English teacher I'd say "Mine doesn't like cooking either." As
chief cook & bottle washer in the Hinton residence I enjoyed the series of ads
on our daughter's favourite radio station in which some guy advised some other
guy how about how Real Men supposedly behave. I haven't heard such ads lately
... perhaps because others reacted the same way I did. I don't remember which
brand of beer they wanted their listeners to buy. But I liked the scenario in
which Macho Man comments to a male friend, who has just ordered a salad, "Cows
eat [the green stuff]... we eat the cows!" From an anthropological standpoint
it makes sense to me that women & children who could get by on fruit & veggies
(together with the scraps of meat the Hunters overlooked &/or didn't bother to
pick off the bone) would have an evolutionary advantage. If your job is to go
berry-picking & you must at the same time meet the needs of young children who
want to be fed every couple of hours, it's very different from that of Hunters
who must ingest enough protein & fat at one meal to last until they have found
another source of protein & fat. What makes this joke amusing AFAIC is that I
don't personally know anyone who has to load up on whale meat & blubber (e.g.)
because they may have to go without food for several days, but a lot of people
seem to think they do. And I note with interest that at a campout where there
are various families involved girls come to me for advice re which berries are
edible, while boys chop wood & men discuss in detail how to build a fire. :-)

ak> When a man pretends that he is in love with a woman
ak> he tries to be merry, gallant, to pay all possible
   ak> attention to her.

Yeah, Dallas & I heard all about that from his ex-wife. Within hours
of the ceremony she realized she had made a big mistake because he treated her
like the dirt beneath his feet as soon as they were legally married... (sigh).

ak> But if a man is really fell in love he resembles a sheep.
                     | is really in love
                     | has really fallen in love

Hey, Jude... open your mouth & tell her what's on your mind! Chances
are she feels the same way about you, but is hesitant to say so lest you think
she's too forward (or something). Lennon & McCartney understood that although
Jude's demeanour may seem rather inept that's how she knows he's sincere. ;-)

ak> A strange economic crisis happened in Russia:
ak> All automobile sales centers have sold their cars up to
   ak> the middle of 2015.

IOW, the demand exceeds the supply... or does it? Satire alert. :-))

Most people I know would buy last year's model because they can get
it at a reduced price... assuming they can afford to buy a new car as opposed
to a used one & needn't rely on public transit. If you guys are so well off
you are lining up to buy the most recent model... Not Our Class, Dear! OTOH I
see real estate prices being driven up by folks from Hong Kong who buy housing
they have no intention of living in permanently, unless things go amiss Over
There... and I understand that, from their POV, housing in Vancouver & its
suburbs is cheap. Now tell me how ordinary Russians live. I reckon the
proportion of individuals who don't care how much money it takes to impress
their friends & neighbours is about the same on both sides of the Atlantic,
   Pacific, or Arctic Ocean.... :-)
