Hi, Alexander! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:               ak> Meat is uncountable like milk and is used without any article.               AH> Usually... but not always. In our household you might also hear        AH> me say (in my capacity as chief cook & bottle washer) "I'll get        AH> around to that as soon as I've put away the meat & the milk I        AH> just brought home from the grocery store." Having worked in the        AH> restaurant business, I attach a high priority to safe food        AH> handling... and I specify which meat & milk I'm referring to so        AH> that other family members know I'm not neglecting them if they        AH> have to wait awhile.               ak> Well, I got heated when I said "without any article". ;) I meant        ak> "a" only. Actually, of course, "the" can be used with any noun.                      And of course I had to ponder this "rule" for awhile in case there       might be an occasional exception which neither of us had thought of... [grin].               When you say "any noun", e.g., I think of proper nouns too. But I       guess you could say "the Queen Elizabeth II who lives in Buckingham Palace" if       there's the remotest possibility someone else has the same name. The use of a       restrictive clause introduced by "who", "which" or "that"... whether expressed       or implied... calls for "the". I think you've got the idea, at any rate. :-)                                   --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+        * Origin: Wits' End, Vancouver CANADA (1:153/716)    |
