Hi, Denis! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:               AH> Later... when this instructor wrote "programme" on the        AH> chalkboard... she remarked "No pseudo-French spellings,        AH> please!"               DM> No pseudo-grarhics, please, Ardith                      I think you mean "pseudo-graphics"... but I'm not sure what you're       referring to here unless perhaps your keyboard doesn't include the ampersand       (i.e. a stylized form of the French word for "and"). This symbol is in such       common use among native speakers of English that schoolchildren memorized it       along with the alphabet during the 19th century. Now that I think about it,       however, it seems to be notable by its absence in echomail from Russia. ;-)                                   --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+        * Origin: Wits' End, Vancouver CANADA (1:153/716)    |
