Major Earthquake & Tsunami Strike Japan
   11 Mar 11 23:14:00

As you may have already heard, a very major earthquake measuring 8.8-8.9 on
the Richter Scale struck the populous Japanese island of Honshu on Friday
afternoon, or late Thursday night USA EST. The quake originated 15-17 miles
underground in an induction zone that is located about eighty miles from the
Japanese east coast. Geological organizations are stating that it is one of
the worst earthquakes of the past century, as well as the biggest temblor
ever recorded in Japan. The quake was so strong, that it even caused
skyscrapers in Tokyo, 230 miles away, to sway.

Having lived through a 7.9-8.2 quake myself not quite twenty years ago, I
can't begin to imagine how much more powerful an 8.9 quake would be. That
would be about ten times stronger than the one that I went through, if you
understand how the Richter Scale works. At about the time that this latest
earthquake occurred, I had just laid down to take an afternoon nap, which is
probably why I don't recall feeling any movement here.

To make matters worse, the earthquake generated a powerful tsunami that was
over twelve feet high, which has caused major devastation in Japan. Living
near the ocean for many years, I am very familiar with the power of ocean
waves. I have seen their devastation here. A twelve-foot plus wave roaring
along like a freight train at over 500 MPH packs a lot of destructive power,
so I am not surprised by the reports that I have been reading.

Please keep God's children in that country in your thoughts and prayers. I
don't know how many of them there are now in Japan, but when I lived there
about twenty-five years ago, under one per cent of Japanese were Christian.
Hopefully, the number has increased since that time. Most Japanese are
   Buddhists and Shintoists.
