Roy>> You, being a bit closer to the mod, should make that point. The
Roy>> problem being, how to enforce read-only access to that link. Any
Roy>> downlink, even a 'read-only downlink' can dump the echo onto a

RW> YEs, did make that suggestion, and yes that could be done.
RW> However, if somebody puts it up for public access, i.. on
RW> the web or something it's pretty obvious somebody is
RW> violating one of them thar gentlemens' agreements.

Yeup. But it can be shown to their IP that what they're doing is in
violation of the echo rules. That may be taken seriously and the posts
deleted from the site. Which requires a diplomatic approach from the mod
and an open minded IP admin...

RW> I, for example, when I was feeding Daryl Stout passed the
RW> r19 echoes through to him from rc19 with hwom I connect for
RW> other purposes. I passed the r14 stuff through except for
RW> 14_chat, was always an open echo for users points and
RW> anybody within r14 back in the day. Then after awhile I
RW> even passed that one through to him without reading it.

That is against the present RC19's mandate that you get the regional
echoes from him. Only he can route it through a non-regional node.

RW> The unseen point thing though is an old trick, and when I
RW> took down my system and was pointing off a buddy for awhile
RW> he fed me a lot of sysop restricted echoes as a point, read
RW> only of course. Then when he went dark 3 months later i was calling
RW> ld as a point to pick up fido traffic from somebody else as a point,
RW> and didn't really want the ld downloads of anything but certain
RW> echoes of particular interest to me.

   Understood.

RW> But, were I mod in question I'd make it pretty explicit what sort of
RW> access was permitted, and what wasn't. YEs, some folks might
RW> circumvent those restrictions, but most long time Fido folks won't
RW> without good reason. I told my local boss node when I first started
RW> pointing off him and he was last man standing for local FIdo bbs that
RW> I really wasn't that interested, and that he was violating some
RW> standards of conduct. HE did ask permission from the nc for me to
RW> have write access to the netwide sysop echo though.

If you're acting like a sysop, why not treat you like a sysop...no harm in
   that.
