The ferns shown above were found        in Singapore, in the MacRitchie Nature Reserve. Their green leaves        look like banana leaves and may grow over 6 feet (2 m) long. Because        their overall shape resembles a basket or a nest, hence the name        bird’s nest ferns. The "basket" catches dead leaves as they fall        (bottom photo), along with rainwater, allowing nutrients to be absorbed        for the ferns to grow.
