Bird's Nest Ferns, also known as Asplenium nidus, grow on trees
and on other plants in the tropics of Southeast Asia, Malaysia,
Indonesia, Australia, and Polynesia. The ferns shown above were found
in Singapore, in the MacRitchie Nature Reserve. Their green leaves
look like banana leaves and may grow over 6 feet (2 m) long. Because
their overall shape resembles a basket or a nest, hence the name
bird’s nest ferns. The "basket" catches dead leaves as they fall
(bottom photo), along with rainwater, allowing nutrients to be absorbed
for the ferns to grow. Photos taken on October 16, 2022
