   I still have modest success using: "telnet  25" at the command prompt.   
   But I keep making typing mistakes to consider using that as a solution, even   
   if I wanted just to fire off a one-liner.  When I was exclusively on dialup, I   
   used that method to get a heads-up on the mail waiting at the server, and I   
   would delete anything that had large attachments before I switched to my usual   
   GUI mail program.
