Torture was probably        more limited in the New World, to those who had money. After        all, the entire population was pagan, so any attempt to convert        with torture would have automatically sparked an uprising.               OTOH, torturing the rich and powerful was probably not much        objectionable to the common people. That would have been done by        the govt agents, not the religious.
