|    "politicizing" tragedy    |
|    19 Dec 12 22:37:25    |
Hello John,              JM>Excerpt from internet article:              The NRA is silent, its web page being dark and blank.              JM>And so here we are smack in the middle of a debate frenzy over gun       JM>control --- and who didn't know this was where this tragedy was       JM>going to go as soon as the news started breaking.              Polls are showing a vast majority of Americans as being in favor       of stronger gun control measures than are in place now. Gun control       measures such as re-imposing a ban on assault weapons. As such, gun       nuts should not be surprised the NRA is silent.              JM>>Where were the first comments on gun control come from after the       JM>shootings?              From the parents of those school children killed in Connecticut.              JM>From liberals.              Those parents are grieving parents, not liberals or conservatives.              JM>From Democrats.              Regardless of party affiliation, all parents are concerned about       their children. The NRA knows that, which is one of the reasons       why it is silent.              JM>You had New York Congressman Jerold Nadler, a Democrat. Then there       JM>was Roger Moore ... an unidentifiable species. Obama hinted at the       JM>need for more gun control legislation in his otherwise exemplary       JM>statement on Friday afternoon. But ... let's remember Rahm's Law:       JM>"Never let a good disaster go to waste." It became clear very       JM>quickly that the left was going to manipulate the nation's horror       JM>and sadness into a quick acceptance of additional laws restricting       JM>the law-abiding citizen's right to own a firearm.              Nobody should have the right to own assault weapons.       Nobody should have the right to own clips that can hold       30 or 90 rounds of ammunition. Nobody should have the       right to go to a gun show and walk away with the weapon       of their choice with no background check. Too many       people, including children, have lost their lives already.              JM>Then - oddly enough - as soon as conservatives and Republicans       JM>stepped forward to comment on the shootings; suggesting, for       JM>instance, that one teacher or administrator with access to a firearm       JM>might have saved lives;              Arming teachers is one of the stupidest ideas of all time.       Teachers are not trained to use weapons. And they certainly       are not not paid high enough to expect them to put their lives       on the line when a madman armed with enough weapons and ammo       to stock a small army comes their way.              Think about what would have happened had people in that movie       theater in Aurora, Colorado been armed. Rather than a dozen dead       people, with dozens more injured, it would likely have been hundreds       dead and injured, as people would have been shooting each other in       the dark (with the gunman who started it all probably escaping with       nothing more than a scratch and a grin on his face).              JM>the left immediately erupted into accusations that the Republicans       JM>were "politicizing" this horrible tragedy.              Republicans should join with Democrats and the rest of America in       putting an end to the violence afflicting our nation. They can start       by showing their support for re-imposing a ban on assault weapons.              JM>Jerold Nadler, Chuck Schumer, Roger Moore --- they weren't       JM>politicizing. Only conservatives were doing that.              This issue is about saving lives, not scoring brownie points       for the NRA or gun manufacturers. As such, when will Republicans       step up to the plate and do what is right?              JM>Yeah --- right.              Democrats and Independents are already stepping up to the plate.       Although Republicans would prefer to sit this one out, I doubt the       American people will let them. Not this time. Too many school       children have lost their lives, needlessly. President Barack Obama       said it right in his speech the other night - "We won't tolerate       this any more!"              --Lee              --- MesNews/1.06.00.00-gb        * Origin: news://felten.yi.org (2:203/2)    |
