Hello Bob,              BOB KLAHN -> MATT MUNSON presented the following explanation :              BK>The Debate echo has a rule against posting full articles. Only       BK>when a short excerpt would be as long as the full article would       BK>that be allowed.              BK>Post an excerpt and a link.              Rules clarification -              What Matt posted was not an article, but a commentary on an article       posted on the WSJ web site. I am not sure if it is even possible to       give a specific url or link that participants could go to in order to       read that commentary, as there may be literally thousands of different       commentaries to a specific article.              Matt was addressing the subject matter rather than the article,       having found a commentary that he felt most relevant since it was       from an employee's perspective. Or former employee's perspective,       as the case may be.              There are always (or should be) gray areas in moderator's rules.       As well as exceptions. What qualifies as an article? How long of       an excerpt would you, as moderator, consider as being excessive?       And in what cases, if any, are there where content matter is more       important than length?              Noam Chomsky allows book excerpts up to eight chapters per book       to be posted online. If two people were to get together they could       post an entire book by Noam Chomsky without being in violation of       copyright law. Imagine that. Hundreds of pages uploaded to a       fidonet echo, made available for all to read. It has been done       before. Make that thousands of pages, if multiple books are       posted. And that is just Noam Chomsky's books. No telling how       many pages and books could be uploaded if somebody were to stumble       onto the Internet Public Library ...              --Lee              --- MesNews/1.06.00.00-gb        * Origin: news://felten.yi.org (2:203/2)    |
