    Years ago I was waiting for someone at one of the local   
    hospitals. There was an old man in the waiting room who was a   
    volunteer greeter/guide/etc. As things were slow we got to   
    talking. He was a retired surgeon, and former chief surgeon at   
    one of the other local hospitals, one of the big ones. During   
    WWII he had been an Army doctor, and had known a fellow in the   
    Manhattan project since college.   
      
    The fellow in the Manhattan project didn't tell him anything   
    about what he was doing until after the war. The surgeon told me   
    that fellow continued with nuclear energy research until he   
    retired just a few years before. This would have been about 5   
    years ago.   
      
    His manhattan project nuclear physicist buddy credited learning   
    his original science knowledge, as a child, from reading Popular   
    Mechanics.
