I didn't sign up for the draft until I left the Army *after* WWII. I was
too young for the draft when I enlisted. It was odd but there was a
requirement for all of us in the Service who hadn't singed for the draft to
do so after we were discharged from the military. we were all placed in
wot was called "the Inactive Reserve", meaning we could not be drafted
   unless Congress changed the law.

At the Separation Center, after the war, it usually took about three days
for each of us to be processed and discharged. The Army speeded that
process up to a single day FOR ALL WHO RE-ENLISTED IN THE *ACTIVE* RESERVE.
That group was eligible for immediate recall! Ironically most of them
ended up on active duty during the Korean "war". And all, to get out of
the Army a day or two sooner!
