I had the extact same HP DL380s with the exact same issues, but there is a
solution to the fan full blast issue. You have to disable the onboard array
controller and install another raid controller, like an LSI Megaraid 9261-8i.
You can connect the drives to the LSI controller and no blasting fans in the
DL380. I ran mine like that for years before I had the SuperMicros.

But I wasn't a fan of those small 2.5" drives anyway since you couldn't find
anything larger than 1TB which not near enough these days.

I have been using LSI Megaraid 9361-8i controllers in my latest upgrade, which
also has 1G of battery backed up cache. Works like a champ. I had to swap
out the cables when I went to from the 9261-8i to 9361-8i, but the upgrade was
well worth it. The speed and rebuild times are WAY faster.
