   No, you /can/ get /both/ digital and HD with an external antenna (we do this   
   here) but where the problem is is in the receiver. both take different   
   circuitry that is found in "regular" TV's, the Cbale companies and dish   
   networks convert this for you, but if you're getting them of-air, you have to   
   have the right reciever or decoder.
