When I first started on bbs's, and in Fidonet, one of the things that
was stressed from the outset was that there is no such thing as real
privacy in this bbs world. The sysop, and anyone to whom s/he grants
sysop status to, can read even the messages otherwise marked as private
only to someone else, for starters... and anything echoed goes thru all
sorts of systems where that is also the case. Now, in practice, rarely
does anyone actually bother to read all those messages, including the
private ones (including netmail), especially as it echoes around the
world. But there is still no real privacy guarantee.

Anything that is so personal/sensitive that it HAS to be kept private
needs to be said face to face in person in a very private setting,
bottom line. Even corded phone to corded phone (yeah, I know, how old-
fashioned! ) isn't totally secure or private.

That being said, I agree that the contents of Fido echos shouldn't be
broadcast all over the internet, etc... and that they should be kept as
much as possible as safe havens. It just isn't reasonable, though, to
expect them to be sacrosanct and inviolable.

... It is "USER" friendly. But my name doesn't happen to be User.
