-=> Quoting Danny Ceppa to Nancy Backus on 12-24-05 16:54 <=-               DC>> The i-net has taken away the personalism that was and is FIDO.                 NB> The newsgroups that seem to have managed to hang on with some degree        NB> of flourishing are the ones in which the participants tended to act as        NB> though it was a Fido echo, answering most in the newsgroup instead of        NB> shooting off their replies via email privately, unless there were some               DC> But it's still not FIDO!               True enough. The point I was making was that the newgroups that most       resembled Fido were the ones that managed to keep going the best.               NB> good reason to MAKE it private. Gen.medieval has flourished, as it        NB> became mostly a scholarly public forum, although not without a degree        NB> of spam and trolls... I have found some very good information there,               DC> That is one thing that FIDO has always fought against.                Yes, and the lack of spam and trolls (mostly) is part of what does make       FIDO much preferable and more enjoyable, and why the Inet is still not       FIDO... :)               NB> But by and large, the newgroups, even for genealogy, lost most of the        NB> personality and personable-ness that had been the rule in the Fido        NB> echos. I had had my reservations as to whether the Inet was going to               DC> And that's why I stay with FIDO.               Likewise. And also to avoid the afore-mentioned spam and trolls. I       have no desire to be actually using the newsgroups directly on the       internet, even though now it is possible for me to be doing it. Reading       the few I do, through the RIME-gating on Chowda, is sufficient. :)              ttyl neb              ... Having given up in my search for reality, I seek now a good fantasy.              ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.20              --- ViaMAIL!/WC v1.60d        * Origin: Chowdanet (401-724-4410) telnet://chowdanet.com (1:323/120)    |
