   I read the whole thing for the first time when I was in high school.  It   
   was partly sorta on a dare, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The dare...?   
   Well, I had confessed to being a fast reader, and a friend suggested   
   that I might not be reading with comprehension... so sent me home with   
   the first volume of the trilogy, to report on the next day.  Of course,   
   I had it finished, and proceded to give her the story, with great   
   detail...  She laughed and stopped me after about the first couple of   
   chapters...     And never doubted my comprehension after that.  And,   
   of course, I went out and got the rest of the story!  :)  And have since   
   accumulated just about everything Tolkien's written as well, including   
   the books that give some of the background of the elements of Middle   
   Earth, the background mythologies and such... even the extra songs/   
   sagas...
