NB> It's a willing suspension of reality, as far as I can tell... Perhaps
NB> the poor acting gives it a sense of verisimilitude...? (See... they
NB> HAVE to be real... actors would do a better job! (Or something like
    NB> that... ))

LOL! Actually, there are some good actors in them (at times). And
many a star has gotten their first role on a soap. Some, like
Susam Lucci, are stuck there forever.

DC> What I find even more interesting is that you only have to watch
DC> one show a week. The Monday show gives a full recap of last week's
    DC> earth-shaking developments.

NB> What's worse, one can see one show and then, a year or two later,
NB> happen to see another, and STILL not have lost the thread....! Or, see
NB> it years later, and still recognize some/most of the characters...
NB> Granted, 20 years later one needs to watch a couple of shows to pick
NB> up the story line again... sort of... The plots don't really change
NB> all that much... it's just the "next generation" doing it this time...

See above! Susan Lucci started her character as a teenager. She's
   now one of the matriarchs.
