   there is a small package you can install, provided by a group of hobbyists, to   
   restore functionality to windows update. using that you can get your machine   
   up to the newest point possible. check out https://legacyupdate.net   
      
   i recently put together a machine to do that too.. play some old point and   
   click games that never made it to steam (or are incredibly broken otherwise)   
      
   just don't use it for day-to-day stuff (casual web browsing) anymore .. up to   
   date for xp definitely doesn't mean secure ;)
